Innovative Solutions for Real-World Challenges: The Smart Industry Solutions Hackathon brings together talented individuals and companies

44 hours, six industry challenges, and plenty of innovative spirit: From September 18 to 20, 2026, the DigiLab at TechCampus turned into a creative hub for students, young professionals, aspiring entrepreneurs, and company representatives. The Smart Industry Solutions Hackathon was organized by the regional innovation center AI TRAQC in collaboration with the STARTKLAR Startup Center at Heilbronn University.

The event kicked off on Friday evening with an introduction for the 19 participants. Following a welcome address by Prof. Dr. Jochen Günther, head of the Business Innovation & Entrepreneurship division within the AI TRAQC project, the hackathon’s objectives, schedule, and evaluation criteria were presented. The focus was on six real-world challenges in the fields of artificial intelligence, digitalization, and smart industry. These were presented by Hans Bioe (Boie GmbH), Thomas Althaus (DACHSER SE), and Axel Petereit and Edras Pacola (Microchip Technology Inc.). The challenges formed the basis for the subsequent team formation, before the interdisciplinary groups began their intensive work phase.

Through Sunday afternoon, the teams developed innovative solutions based on company data provided to them, built prototypes, and prepared their final presentations. They received support, among other things, through pitch training led by Janina Adamo-Bornowski from the STARTKLAR team.

Then the moment finally arrived: the six teams Rau Matcher, Without Seals, Vantage, Binary Minds, PIC5, and Macrodea each had five minutes to present their innovative results to a panel of experts. The solutions they developed ranged from AI-powered product searches and automated matching processes to new approaches for greater transparency in supply chains. The jury consisted of Prof. Dr. Raoul Zöllner, Vice Rector for Research, Transfer and Innovation at Heilbronn University and project manager of AI TRAQC, Martin Vural from the STARTKLAR Startup Center, Sigrid Rögner from IDS Imaging Development Systems GmbH and Peter Kühfuß from KMPC Innovations GmbH

The challenge presented by Boie GmbH, which called for the development of intelligent search and support solutions for customers, generated particularly strong interest. First place went to team Vantage, which impressed the judges with an AI-based solution tailored to this specific challenge. Second place went to team Without Seals, which approached the same challenge from a different perspective. The different approaches to the challenge impressively demonstrate just how many different ways there are to solve the same problem. Third place went to team PIC5, which presented an interactive prototype for a trade show booth based on Microchip hardware and the Zephyr RTOS operating system.

In addition to the technical work, the hackathon primarily provided a space for exchange, networking, and collaborative learning. Participants benefited from direct contact with companies, mentors, and jury members and gained valuable insights into current challenges facing the industry. At the same time, the companies were able to experience how quickly innovative concepts emerge from fresh ideas and diverse perspectives.

The Smart Industry Solutions Hackathon 2026 impressively demonstrated the potential that lies in collaboration between universities, industry, and up-and-coming talent. In just 44 hours, participants developed solutions with real-world application potential and forged valuable connections between companies and the professionals of tomorrow.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all participants, the jury members, and the partner companies Microchip, DACHSER, and Boie for their commitment and support.
